Police raid Brunswick smoke shop, arrest four for synthetic marijuana production

Special to SEGAZINE

Four people have been arrested on drug charges Wednesday in the wake of raids the day before at a Brunswick smoke shop, a duplex and several homes, police said.

In executing four search warrants beginning at 4 p.m. Tuesday, police discovered evidence at a duplex on 4th Avenue in Brunswick that they believe shows that synthetic cannabinoid, or synthetic marijuana, was being produced there, said Capt. Terry Wright, commander of the Glynn/Brunswick Narcotics Enforcement Team.

The agency launched an investigation several weeks ago after eight people were taken to the emergency room after smoking a “chemical-laced leafy material often advertised as herbal incense,’’ Wright said. The number sickened has grown to about two dozen after the initial group reported smoking something called “Crazy Clown’’ that was obtained from Mary Jane’s Emporium, a Brunswick smoke shop.

The most recent incident was Saturday when a man was hospitalized in Athens after smoking spice, county police Chief Matt Doering said.“He bought it here,’’ Doering said.
