Judicial Council says Waycross Circuit needs fourth Superior Court judge

Special to SEGAZINE

The Judicial Council of Georgia has recommended that a fourth Superior Court judgeship be established for the six-county Waycross Judicial Circuit.

The recommendation for the judgeship and another in the Coweta circuit was based on caseload data and forwarded to Gov. Nathan Deal and the General Assembly for possible action in the 2014 legislative session.

State Sen. Tyler Harper, R-Ocilla, said he believes the additional position is needed partly because the judges’ work in handling a high number of cases is made worse by the size of the circuit.

“The biggest issue is them being able to get across the circuit,’’ Harper said.

The circuit encompasses Coffee, Bacon, Pierce, Brantley, Charlton and Ware counties. All but Brantley County are in Harper’s 7th district.

Two of the judges, Chief Judge Dwayne Gillis and Jeffrey H. Kight, live in Douglas although Kight lists Blackshear as his office.
