Pierce won’t save former church annex building

Special to SEGAZINE

The county commission will not save the old Strickland Avenue Courthouse Annex old First Baptist Church and will seek bids to investigate demolishing the building.

County manager Paul Christian reported to the board about a recent structural and architectural review of the building.

Christian said he asked architect Doug Neal of St. Simons to do walk-thru of the building and give an estimate on restoring it.Neal’s findings were delivered in a letter dated Sept. 10. Neal’s estimate came to $2.2 million.

Christian said he believes that figure to be a “low.”Neal noted that much of the building is in “poor” condition with water damage, a severe mold problem and roof and window problems. He also noted that the plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems in the entire 16,605 square foot building would have to be re-worked. He also noted the presence of asbestos and lead-based paint in the building.

“I think the estimate he gave is just to get it up to code requirements,” he said. “I think it’s a very conservative estimate.”
