Autopsy to be conducted on body of Waycross man killed in police-involved shooting

Special to SEGAZINE

An autopsy will be conducted early this week on the body of a Waycross man killed at his home Friday in a police-involved shooting, said Russell Mansfield, special agent in charge of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Douglas office.

“The body is on the way to a crime lab or will be soon,’’ Mansfield said.

The GBI is investigating the death at the request of Waycross Police Chief Tony Tanner.

The victim has been identified as Jack Lamar Roberson, 43. He lived in a mobile home on Reed Street in Waycross where he was shot to death about 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Mansfield said he would issue no statements on the investigation until the autopsy and other elements of the probe are complete.

He declined to say why officers went to the mobile home or what prompted the shooting, but Waycross Mayor Clarence Billups said Friday the two officers were dispatched in response to a call that a man was threatening suicide.

When officers arrived the man had a knife that he refused to put down, Billups said.
