Rayonier asking Wayne for $1.5 million in tax refunds

Special to SEGAZINE

Rayonier Forest Resources still wants $1.5 million in past property-tax payments refunded.

And the Wayne County Board of Tax Assessors still wants Rayonier to wait for a revaluation of its timberland to be completed.

Todd Carter, representing the Board of Assessors in Wayne Superior Court Tuesday morning, said that the revaluation is on track to be complete by the end of December.

Rayonier was asking for a summary judgment, and the county was asking that the motion be dismissed.

After accepting reams of paperwork from Rayonier and listening to Carter and Rayonier attorney Jay Roberts, Judge Ronnie Rahn invited short follow-up letters from the lawyers for him to consider in making a later ruling on the refund request.

On the broader issue of the valuation dispute, he said, “There’s got to be a resolution to this matter.”

Last year, in regard to a suit filed by Rayonier, Judge Stephen Kelley ruled the county‘s valuation methods for reassessing large-acreage parcels in 2008 invalid.

The appeals from that ruling were settled this past April.
