Charlton commissioners ponder extra funding for library

Special to SEGAZINE

Concerned the public library’s current financial crisis could be an ongoing problem, the Charlton County Commission is having a hard time deciding what to do about the situation.

“They’re asking us for an additional $18,000 in 2014,” said Commissioner John Meyer, who has been preparing a report on the library for the rest of the board. “The problem is, I think this amount will be ongoing and will continue to increase every year.”

County Administrator Al Crace supported that opinion.

“The state has changed their fundamental contract with the libraries and is pushing the cost of insurance for library employees off onto local governments,” he said. “We don’t expect that to change, so it will likely be an ongoing expense.”
