County decision on legal organ challenged by Vaughan, Express

Special to SEGAZINE

First they came for the Communists,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Communist.
Then they came for the Socialists,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist.
Then they came for me,
and there was no one left to speak for me.

A famous statement and provocative poem attributed to pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) about the cowardice of German intellectuals following the Nazis‘ rise to power and the subsequent purging of their chosen targets, group after group.

The Brantley Enterprise has learned that Brantley Express publisher Mittie Vaughan has hired a Blackshear attorney to challenge the county’s selection of the Brantley Enterprise as the county’s legal organ. Attorney Phillip Golub already has delayed the effective date of the change to Feb. 1, forcing the county to advertise the decision four weeks in the Express. A final decision is expected by Friday.

We’d like to thank those who stood by us in the months leading up to this year’s decision. Now the focus must shift from the county officials to the Express.

How can you claim to speak for me when I know for a fact that you do not get the true facts and that you print lies. I feel that we as Americans have the right to decide for ourselves what paper we want to buy. When did you become the only paper in Brantley County and when did God die and make you one. Try not to get mad I am a concerned citizen saying how I feel and since I feel different than you I know that how I feel will not be published. Only lies will be published and not verified. I still have freedom of speech until the government takes it away but for now I have the right to express my opinion. And like pine trees my opinion is still being heard in Brantley County. If I want to spend my money on the Brantley Express which I do more often than not, because of the lies in yours, that is my business and you need to stop trying to make yourself all important.
