Special to SEGAZINE

A Coffee County woman died this week of the flu, the Georgia Department of Public Health said. The woman, who died while hospitalized, was older, and hers was among 20 flu-related deaths in Georgia, said Roger Naylor, spokesman for the 16-county Southeast Health District.Naylor said he could not identify the victim because of privacy laws.Flu is widespread in Georgia, which is common for this time of year, said Cherie Drenzek, state epidemiologist for the Department of Public Health. The H1N1 strain appears to be the predominant strain in this year’s outbreak, but it is one of the strains for which this season’s flu vaccine provides protection, she said. The flu is characterized by the quick onset of an overall feeling of achiness and discomfort and can include a cough, runny nose, sore throat and fever.
