Waynesville man who helped brother flee Woodbine murder scene pleads guilty, goes free

The brother and co-defendant of a man sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder of a Woodbine man pleaded guilty to reduced charges Monday and was released from jail after having served 18 months.

Cyrus Jonathan Bell, 29, of Waynesville, pleaded guilty to hindering the apprehension of his brother, Timothy Demetrius Sapp, 34, tampering with evidence and making a false statement to an investigator. Like his brother, Bell had been charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and weapons charges in the July 27, shooting death of Charles “Peanut” Smith, 34, at a public housing complex in Woodbine.
