Most of us pay our garbage bills every quarter, but did you know you’re also paying for some of your neighbors?
At last week’s Bacon County commission work session, Commissioner Roy Newberry said the county is paying $80,000 to $160,000 more to Southland Waste than it is collecting each year. That money comes out of the county’s general fund, which means property tax dollars.
“It’s ridiculous to have this kind of loss every year,” the commissioner said. “It’s insane. We’re sending them a check for $26,000 every month and sometimes we only collect $12,000.”
