Great white sharks tracked off coast of southeast Georgia

Special to SEGAZINE

Two great white sharks surfaced in the waters off the coasts of Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia on Sunday.

According to great white shark research group Ocearch, Katharine – a 14-foot, 2,300-pound shark – and    Mary Lee – a 16-foot, 3,456-pound shark – were tracked in the Atlantic’s waters via “pings” set off by tracking devices on the sharks’ dorsal fins.

Katharine was tracked twice Sunday, first at 3:53 p.m., just north of the Florida/Georgia line, and again at 4:38 p.m., several miles east of its earlier ping. Katharine’s closest brush with the Georgia coast came on Feb. 24 at 10:23 p.m., according to Ocearch’s Global Shark Tracker.
