Jury in second day of deliberations on murder of Glynn County man

Ken Buchanan

The jury in the trial of two Glynn County residents charged with murder in the death of another Glynn County person in Brantley County continued deliberations today after being charged Thursday at about 4 p.m.

Dayquan Marquez Mangram, 18, and Rena Lang sat in the courtroom of the Brantley County courthouse late yesterday and returned this morning, awaiting their fate after being tried for felony murder, malice murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during commission of a crime and concealing a death in the May 25 slaying of Ultavious Gillard, 18.

A third defendant, Shaquilla Janna White, 22, agreed to testify against the other two for a reduced sentence.

A couple of hours after the jury began deliberations it issued a request to Judge DeWayne Gillis for clarification on the definitions of malice murder and felony murder, and an hour or so later sent another message to the judge which was not read aloud in the courtroom but which resulted in the judge calling for a one-hour supper break with the admonition they could get back to it afterward.

The jury continued deliberations until 11:30 p.m. but the Brantley County clerk of court office reported that the jury still had not returned a verdict as of 9 a.m. today and was expected to return to work at 10 a.m.
