SGSC names interim VP

South Georgia State College has announced that Dr. Patricia (Pat) Brown of Sylva, N.C., has been named Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs. She will temporarily fill the position vacated by Dr. Carl McDonald, who retired at the end of spring semester after 19 years at the former South Georgia College, now South Georgia State College, six of which were spent as Vice President for Academic Affairs. South Georgia State College will conduct a nationwide search for a permanent Vice President for Academic Affairs in the fall of 2013 with plans to have the position filled by January 2014.

Dr. Brown has over 30 years of experience in higher education, including academic affairs, adult education, distance learning, program development, military education and healthcare. She holds degrees from Temple University, Boston University School of Medicine and Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing.

Dr. Brown was Educational Outreach Dean and Emeritus Professor at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C., where she was instrumental in developing programs and partnerships in a variety of areas, including online course and program development, military education, international programs and the implementation of best practices to support the growth of distance learning. In addition, Dr. Brown established a Military Education Office and negotiated degree completion programs with the Army, National Guard and the Marine Corps. She began her career as an assistant professor of biology at the former Glassboro State College, now Rowan University, in New Jersey.

She has held positions at Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions (Boston, Mass.), International Center for Distance Learning, Inc. (Boston, Mass.), Thomas Edison State College (Trenton, N.J.), Saint Joseph’s College (Standish, Maine), Boston University (Boston, Mass.) and Glassboro State College (now Rowan University in Glassboro, N.J.).

Dr. Brown has been active in a number of professional organizations, and she has authored numerous articles and essays that have been published throughout the country. “Dr. Brown brings a wealth of both experience and expertise which will benefit our institution as we continue to strengthen our academic programs. We are honored to have an individual of Dr. Brown’s caliber joining SGSC and look forward to her many contributions,” says Dr. Virginia Carson, SGSC President.
