Glynn faces $162,000 upcharge in murder trial relocation

Special to SEGAZINE

The Glynn County Board of  Commissioners is expected to approve the re-appropriation of $162,000 from the general fund  balance to the  Superior Court’s ‘Felony Murder Case’ budget for the trial of 17-year-old De’Marquis Elkins, the Brunswick youth charged with fatally shooting a 13-month-old baby March 21.

Glynn County Superior Court Judge Stephen Kelley has moved the trial to Cobb County in north Georgia, which will require additional funds for the relocation of  DA’s office officials  to Cobb for the duration of the trial.

With the Elkins trial scheduled for Aug. 19 in Cobb, expenditures will be incurred and currently there is no budget for the expenditures to be charged against.

The actual estimated funding need for the case is not known. County staff have met with the district attorney’s office and Kelley in anticipation of the expenditure but neither side has been able to give an estimate of the trial cost.
