Wayne County school board reduces taxes, furlough days

SPECIAL TO SEGAZINE

The Wayne County Board of Education feels better about its financial situation this year.

It feels so much better, in fact, that Tuesday night it reduced both taxes and furlough days in unanimous votes.

The Board accepted School Superintendent Daryl Fineran’s recommendation to lower the school millage by 5 percent, from the state-allowed maximum of 20 mills to 19 mills.

The vote Tuesday was for a tentative tax rate. The Board scheduled a final vote for a called meeting in the school system’s tech center Sept. 3 at 4 p.m. to allow time for state-required advertising.
