Half sister of slain toddler: Mother’s story didn’t add up

Special to SEGAZINE

Lawyers representing a Brunswick man on trial in the shooting death of a toddler cannot introduce allegations that the slain child’s mother abused drugs, traded sex for drugs or mistreated her older children as part of the defense, the trial judge ruled Wednesday morning.

In her testimony Tuesday, Sherry West, the mother of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago, identified De’Marquise Elkins, 18, as the man who tried to rob her, shot her in the leg and then shot her child in the head as he sat in a stroller.

Judge Stephen Kelley granted a prosecution motion to disallow the evidence on West’s character, especially on issues going back 10 years. When the prosecution made the motion Tuesday night, Kelley recessed court for the day and said he would rule Wednesday morning.

Kelley concluded the allegations against West were not recent enough or similar enough to Antonio’s death for the defense to raise the possibility that someone else shot Antonio.
